So all I did was firing at his eye, crouched reasonably safely in cover and just whittling down his HP without ever moving. "Getting used to it" sounds bad enough already, and with Borderlands not giving you guaranteed great gear from boss fights, spending more time on farming and side quests usually provides better gear.
